The Silent Number: Why Your Blood Pressure Reading Matters

High blood pressure is called the silent killer for a reason: you can walk around for years with readings well above normal and feel completely fine. The damage happens quietly, in the blood vessels of your heart, kidneys, eyes, and brain.

A healthy reading is generally under 120/80. The top number is the pressure while your heart beats; the bottom number is the pressure between beats. Consistently seeing 130/80 or higher is worth a conversation — one high reading at a stressful appointment is not a diagnosis, but a pattern is.

Checking at home gives a far more honest picture than a single clinic visit. Sit with your back supported and feet flat, rest for five minutes first, keep the cuff at heart level, and take two readings a minute apart. Write them down with the date and time.

Small changes move the number more than most people expect: reducing sodium, walking most days, sleeping seven hours, and limiting alcohol can each shave off several points. When lifestyle alone is not enough, medication is safe, well-studied, and often needed only at a low dose.

Bring your home log to your next appointment. It turns a guess into a plan.
